Assignment_03: Workshop Challenge 1-2

List 10 different types of practice today

1_Digital Illustration

With the advent of increasingly powerful software packages, we have seen a surge in the use of digital-illustration during the last twenty years, in all manner of practices ranging from editorial to production-design. Today, the use of digital platforms such as ProCreate, Adobe Photoshop, ZBrush, and Painter have democratised the access to this profession, and consequently, we are now seeing a more diverse talent-pool and a broader conversation on the subject of Digital-Art.

2_UI Design

Similar, to the emergence of Digital-Illustration, the role of the User-interface has become integral to modern society and is embedded in every aspect of our daily-lives. Today, this sector could be viewed as an industry that is independent of the more traditional practices in Graphic Design. With the continued growth of the digital-sector, we can only expect to see a greater divide between traditional practices and those adopted by the Digital-designer.

3_Virtual Reality-based Sculpture

As previously stated, UI-Design and Digital Illustration have played a prominent role in the development of Visual Communication over the last twenty years, and now we are seeing those roles come together to create a new avenue of exploration. The use of virtual reality in digital illustration and the wider creative process, has begun to emerge as a standard practice for a number of prominent creatives, allowing them to explore their 2D artwork in 3D space.

4_Concept/Production Design

The Gaming industry has undergone substantial growth over the last twenty years, in part due to the technological developments in pre-production techniques and a continued improvement in the capacity of the hardware, and this changed how we view the use of visual narrative in games-which, in-turn, has driven the trends in industry and influenced the demands put forward by the consumer.

5_Industrial Design

Industrial design, in my view, can be read as a form of visual communication-the aesthetics containing all manner of subtle references to the visual-vocabulary, used by the respective culture. The most notable examples of this occurrence can be found in the electronics market, in Japan. Even an untrained eye, would be able to identity such a product and give a brief description as to why that product reflected the identity of Japanese culture.

9_Editorial Illustration

The above work is a selection of Editorial-illustration by the Korean Artist, James Jean. In an interview, with Art-Vlog We Eat Art, James said, “Good Art can be good Graphic Design” This is very much the case with his work, having started out as a covers-artist for DC Comics, James has transcended multiple industries including: Ongoing, collaboration with Prada, partnerships with Japanese jewellery companies, poster-designs for large Hollywood Films such as Mother, Blade Runner 2049 and The Shape of water, Regular contributions to Juxtapose magazine, and he has curated solo exhibitions at some of the world’s most prestigious galleries. The appeal of his work is in how he creates a visual narrative that is grounded in the heritage of story-telling, using imagery that is grounded in the folklore and mysticism of countries such as: Japan, India, China and South Korea.

10_Commercial Art

Choose a piece of design that breaks definitions of design practice and write a paragraph describing this practice.

Here we have a piece of Artwork/Design that was created by James Jean, for his recent solo-show in South Korea. This piece is typical of his work, in that it serves multiple functions and takes inspiration from a number of traditional practices in the endeavour of creating something that is, new. So, how do we define this object?-Is it to be referred to as Sculpture? Is it an Art-installation? Stain-Glass design? Illustration? Conceptual Art? Industrial Design? In truth, it is all of those definitions, and yet, it defies being labelled as a singular artwork. James has described his work as, virtuous, elegant, puzzle-like, and as being layered with narrative, that exists to provoke the viewer to explore further. This description of his work calls to my mind a phrase I had read in Alice Rawsthorn’s book, Hello World-“Create intrigue, Create interest” and for me, this is certainly applicable to this work, as it is abound with intrigue-from the narrative to the construction, this object invites you to question it’s existence and in doing so, question the lines between the respective practices that are present in it’s construction.

Come up with a new term that describes this area of work.
