David Carson

For my research this week I have decided to focus on the work of Graphic Designer, Author, and Public speaker David Carson.

From his early work during the early 90’s to his most recent publication NuCollage, David Carson has made major contributions to Visual Communication and the wider conversation around studio-culture. As a self-taught practitioner, he has developed a working-method that is rooted in a punk-rock aesthetic, that seeks to explore the human condition.

The reason that I have chosen to focus on the work of David Carson is that I believe that he is one of the few practitioners working today, that advocates imbuing commercial-work with a degree of ones’ own views and preferences-viewing the identity of self as a tool in the exploration of external subjects. I too, approach the development of my own outputs as a conduit for the exploration of my own state of mind, channeling my inner-self through the visual-languages that I engage with. In my view, when we are commissioned to undertake a project, the one advantage we can offer a client is a unique view of the world.

Lyrics to be explored in this week’s challenge:

Here in the dark, I cherish the moonlight.

I’m in love with the way you’re in love with the night.

And it travels from heart to limb to pen.

Process

Reflecting on the text, I have decided to create a series of digital-collage in order to explore the themes that are present in the selected copy. The words that are present in this body of text are rich and evoke a myriad of emotions, therefore I want to explore the subtext of the lyrics and how I may incorporate those themes into my outcome for this task.

For me, the lyrics are evocative of the past and seem to suggest a yearning for a memory or an individual. There is a need to convey an affection, for a love that is no longer accessible. The opening line deals with isolation and the themes of hope and resilience, of not resigning ones’ self to the depths of the darkness within. A proposal that is applicable to all manner of situations and therefore one that the listener can apply to their own experiences.
